Air India Pilot Interview Questions

Air India traces its origin to Tata Air Services, whose first flight operated on 15 October 1932. It later became Air India and developed into India's flag carrier. The Tata Group regained ownership in January 2022.

Today it is a full-service airline operating domestic and long-haul international services. The merger of Vistara into Air India was completed in November 2024, forming a larger full-service carrier within the Air India Group.

As of 9 August 2026, the airline is 93 years old and approaches its 94th anniversary in October 2026.

Campbell Wilson is Air India's Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. He has held the role since 25 July 2022 and has led the airline through privatisation-era transformation, fleet renewal, and the integration of the Tata airline businesses.

Planespotters.net listed Air India's mainline fleet size as 185 aircraft on 18 July 2026, comprising 151 in service and 34 parked. It separately listed four future or planned aircraft close to delivery.

The fleet includes Airbus A319, A320 and A321 variants, Airbus A350-900s, Boeing 777-200LR and 777-300ER aircraft, and Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 Dreamliners.

The 185 figure excludes Air India Express. Do not combine the two fleets unless the question asks for the group.

Air India combines a domestic network feeding major hubs with a long-haul international network. Its April 2026 route map showed 41 international destinations across five continents, with onward connections to more than 50 Indian destinations through Air India and Air India Express.

During its adjusted June-to-August 2026 schedule, Air India said it would continue operating more than 1,200 international flights per month. I would verify the current schedule before quoting a total daily-flight figure.

By mid-2026, Air India had announced firm orders totalling 600 Airbus and Boeing aircraft: the original 470-aircraft order in 2023, a further 100 Airbus aircraft in 2024, and 30 additional Boeing aircraft in January 2026.

The importance is not only capacity growth. The order supports replacement of legacy aircraft, cabin and fuel-efficiency improvement, network expansion, and major demand for pilots, instructors, simulators, maintenance capability, and operational standardisation across the group.

A relevant recent development is the induction of purpose-built Boeing 787-9 aircraft with Air India's new cabin product. The first arrived in January 2026, and by July the type was operating the Mumbai-London Heathrow route.

At the same time, Air India has been retrofitting legacy 787-8 aircraft and received DGCA approval in July 2026 to use electronic technical logbooks across its Boeing 787 fleet, with parallel implementation on the 777 fleet.

Air India's official cadet process begins with an online application. The technical evaluation assesses areas such as critical thinking, numerical reasoning, performance under pressure, motor skills, and spatial awareness.

The non-technical stage then assesses teamwork, group behaviour, communication, and suitability through panel and group interviews. The exact tools and sequence can change, so I would follow the current invitation and official portal.

The programme provides CPL training followed by aircraft type rating. Current training routes include the Air India Flying Training Academy at Amravati and partner schools in the United States, with type rating at Air India-affiliated approved training organisations according to fleet requirements.

The published programme duration is approximately 24 months, but actual timing depends on training progress, licensing, weather, capacity, and airline requirements. Successful completion may lead to an offer as a trainee pilot subject to the airline's requirements and programme conditions.

Never describe the outcome as unconditional employment.

The merger creates scale, a broader network, a larger premium customer base, and opportunities to combine Vistara's product strengths with Air India's international reach. It also supports a more integrated hub-and-spoke operation.

The challenge is harmonising fleets, manuals, training, seniority structures, rostering, service standards, technology, and organisational culture without weakening safety or operational reliability. I would present it as a long-term opportunity that requires disciplined integration work.
