Every question on AvioQuiz includes a detailed explanation \u2014 not just the answer. Here's a taste.
A constant pressure surface slopes downward from south to north. The geostrophic wind in the Northern Hemisphere blows from:
If a pressure surface slopes downward from south to north, then at any given altitude, pressure is lower to the north and higher to the south. The pressure-gradient force points from south (high) to north (low). In the Northern Hemisphere, Coriolis deflects moving air to the right of its motion, balancing the pressure-gradient force when flow is parallel to the isobars with low pressure on the left. With low to the north, the geostrophic wind must blow from west to east.
As an aircraft accelerates through the transonic speed range, the centre of pressure typically:
In the transonic range, shock waves form on the upper surface and migrate aft along the chord as Mach number rises. Most of the lift is generated ahead of the shock, but as the shock moves rearward the area producing high lift extends further aft, shifting the centre of pressure rearward. This rearward CP shift produces a nose-down pitching moment — the well-known ‘Mach tuck’ — which is one reason high-speed jets need a Mach trim system.
A ring laser gyro measures angular rate by detecting:
A ring laser gyro fires two laser beams in opposite directions around a closed triangular cavity. When the gyro rotates, the beam travelling with the rotation has to cover a slightly longer optical path, while the counter-rotating beam covers a slightly shorter one (the Sagnac effect). The resulting frequency difference between the two beams is directly proportional to angular rate. RLGs have no moving parts, no precession, and no spin-up time — a major reason they replaced mechanical gyros in modern airliners.

The Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL) is the highest level of pilot certification issued by the DGCA. While a CPL allows you to fly as a First Officer, progressing to Captain on any Indian airline — IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet, Akasa Air — requires an ATPL.
ATPL theory exams test significantly deeper knowledge than CPL. Navigation questions involve complex flight planning and polar routes. Meteorology covers advanced stability analysis and global weather patterns. Principles of flight extends into transonic and supersonic aerodynamics. This depth is essential for command-level decision-making.
Many pilots pass their CPL exams but struggle with ATPL theory because the step up in complexity is substantial. AvioQuiz helps bridge that gap with focused, topic-wise practice at the ATPL level.
General Navigation (805 questions) — Goes beyond basic CPL navigation into INS/IRS/FMS integration, grid navigation, polar stereographic projections, advanced flight planning, and detailed compass theory.
Meteorology (1697 questions) — Our largest section covers everything from basic atmospheric physics to advanced topics like upper-level wind patterns, jet streams, tropical revolving storms, mountain waves, and detailed METAR/TAF/SIGMET interpretation.
Air Regulations (1359 questions) — Comprehensive coverage of ICAO annexes, PANS-OPS procedures, detailed separation minima, ATS surveillance, Indian national aviation law, human performance, CRM, and operational procedures.
Technical Subjects (2039 questions) — Principles of flight (including high-speed and swept-wing aerodynamics), airframes & systems, powerplant (piston and gas turbine), electrics & electronics, and instrumentation (air data, gyroscopic, inertial, and electronic display systems).
ATPL exams cover the same subjects as CPL but at a significantly deeper level. ATPL questions require understanding of complex flight planning, advanced navigation, detailed meteorological analysis, and comprehensive systems knowledge for multi-crew airline operations.
You can join as a First Officer with a CPL, but most airlines require ATPL theory pass (frozen ATPL) for career progression. To become a Captain on any Indian airline, you must hold an ATPL.
AvioQuiz currently has 6,240 questions across all ATPL subjects, all accessible during our free launch phase.
